Gabion Walls as Revetments
Gabion walls are non-cemented stone and steel mesh based retention walls that help to retain soil yet allow water to pass through the layers of stone
Gabion walls of stones, neatly packed and held together by coated steel in rectangular caged boxed frames. This technology is one of few non-cement technologies adaptable to various terrains and soil conditions. Though the gabion boxes may look like regular chainlink fences, they have particular binding and coatings. Various gauges of galvanizing or rust-proofing make these boxes long-lasting and durable.
The boxes are made with specialized equipment at certain factories, brought to the site in knocked-down condition, and assembled. The assembled boxes are stacked in an earth-cut foundation and filled with stone layer by layer. After stacking the stones tightly in an organized manner, the gabion boxes are bound together with binding wire of a similar coated grade.
Gabion walls are well recommended for hilly areas with water rivulets and springs. Water can pass through these walls while also holding back the soil. Retaining walls in RR cement masonry cannot withstand water pressures like gabion walls.
Our experience has shown that gabion boxes are more cost-effective and yet aesthetically appealing walls. The walls are also flexible to adapt to the terrain. Walls can be built straight or inclined to the land position.
We recommend using geotextile fabric behind the retention wall to ensure tree and plant roots do not pass through the stone walls.
